He cannot see the difference between
“Thus sayeth the Lord” and
“Thus do I interpret the Lord’s sayings”.
To him, the latter bears
The same authority as the former,
And it is close to inconceivable
That he could ever read it wrong
For he has interpreted the scriptures
To mean that God himself helps him
To understand them, and furthermore,
That the Bible says that he who challenges
The understanding so given
Challenges the authority of
None other than God himself.
And we all know that God
Could never be wrong.
And I don’t know if an argument with God himself
Will be able to persuade this man
Into a different point of view,
Even after he has shed his moral body
And seen the afterlife for himself.
Indeed!
Ask him if he is perfect,
And he will answer, “Surely not!”.
But ask him to explain a Bible passage he likes,
And you’ll likely not see him lift a finger
To try to understand it any better
Than he does already.
He is done learning,
And makes nothing of the grand expanse
Between God’s knowledge and his own.
It does not inspire him.
He does not aspire to do better.
It appears that he has
Willed upon himself a blindness
As to the difference between
God and himself.
