Freedom is always attacked
By tyrants and scoundrels
Who have their own uses for mankind.
But let us not assume that everyone
Other than the tyrants and scoundrels
Wants freedom to thrive, for
Among those to keep to their own business
Are millions who have no use for the
Full freedom America had set up for herself.
They have no intention of making the fullest
Free use even of their own minds,
And much less of the powers of persuasion,
And less, still, of petition and protest.
These are freedoms squandered
By the masses who do not
Understand the value thereof—
And who will, perhaps,
Never understand it
For lack of interest
In exploring.
