That good writing takes good time.
What may surprise many, however, is
That good thinking takes good time, too—
Focused,
Pensive,
Dedicated,
Protected.
So many rarely make provision for it,
And yet, assume they’re doing it pretty well,
More or less.
But clearly, they’ve not taken the time
To think this through,
Nor to read well
Their own writing—
Which is mostly a hurried mess.
Writing at its best is
Thinking on the record—
Showing one’s work
In progressive drafts—
Laying out,
Line by line,
How well we are thinking—
All while counting it important
To get things right.
