If They Win

If they win,
They will not listen any more
To the interior concerns they’ve recently discussed.

If they win,
They will not purge
The corruption of their own incumbents.

If they win,
They will not care
If they hold true to their own platform.

If they win,
They will not heed
Their oaths of office
Any more than they ever have before.

Yet win, they must!
For they are the great hope
Of turning this mess around—
Even if turning this mess around
Mostly means just a token reform or two,
Accompanied by heap big talk about everything else.

And you watch and see how,
When that happens,
That’ll do just fine for most—
Because they don’t understand
Anything deeper about voting
Than competing over candidates.
And they know close to nothing
About the actual issues at play.
