When Does Anybody Really?

When does anybody really give his all?

And for that matter,
Does anyone even know how?

Well, the kids know—
Most of them, at least—
Until they have been trained
Not to do it anymore—
Until they have joined the truce
By which most of us agree
To hold back—
As if to save this world from the excellence
And goodness and joy
That would surely destroy it otherwise.
