I have a belief,
And I’m quite adamant about it—
Even though a great many
Will remain either unconvinced,
Or certain that its opposite is true.
So I will tell you my belief,
And you can fight me over it,
Or perhaps, stay silent about it—
As do so many—
In hopes it will blow over
And we won’t have to discuss it,
Unsettling as it is.
I believe that we can change.
Like, really.
I believe that we can change
Our thinking
Our beliefs
Our actions
Our motives
Our habits
Our attitudes
Our dispositions
And even our feelings about things.
And yes,
There may be some limits
To how much we can change,
But I assert that the possibilities of change
Are far more expansive than most
Might like to admit—
For in admitting it,
We open the door
To that most unsettling question,
“Then why not?”
And I have not yet been able
To come up with a good reason—
An honest
Rational
And responsible reason—
Not to better myself.
You?
