The Soul Needs to Be Heard

The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.

Proverbs 20:5. NIV

He thinks he knows
What lies inside his own heart,
For it is, after all,
His own heart.

But if the truth be told,
They are murky waters,
And deep,
And not well surveyed
Without much churning.

In the depths lie his dreams
And passions.
His convictions and errors
His fears and neglects.
His future.
His present.
And his past.

And he will not know himself
Nearly as well as he thinks he does.
And he will think he is doing fine
When he is not.

As the eyes need light,
And the lungs need air,
So the soul needs to be heard.

As the legs need walking,
And the stomach needs food,
So the soul needs to be heard.

It needs to be drawn out,
Quite deliberately
And methodically
And regularly.

It needs to have its thoughts
Set out in the open,
In the daylight,
To be seen and examined
And discussed among friends,
Who each have a key
And can come and go at will.

And the biggest mistake
Is to be made in thinking
That one can do all this well
By himself.

He cannot.

The wisest will write out
Their thoughts daily,
But even they need the company
Of wise friends to test those thoughts,
Not only to find the errors,
But to highlight the good ones.

The soul needs to be heard.
