You can talk about the deep things
With your friends,
But most aren’t very good at it.
Don’t get me wrong;
They might like a taste of it now and then,
But they’re not accustomed enough
To reflective thinking
To be able to handle much of it at once.
They’re not very good
At slowing down
To the speed at which
The mind works the best.
And when they do,
They often find other thoughts
Popping up that
They’re rather not entertain.
So until they have
The courage to face those thoughts
And to settle them—
And have made the time to do it—
They’re just not going to be very comfortable
Visiting the reflective world
For long at a time,
Though they may fancy
The occasional visit.
