When You Defend

When you defend the bad deeds of

  • your government
  • your country
  • your party
  • your church
  • your leaders
  • your school
  • your team
  • your company
  • your boss
  • your mentor
  • your friends
  • your parents
  • your siblings
  • your spouse
  • your kids
  • your extended family
  • your captors
  • your enemies, or
  • yourself

You are engaging in the exact behavior that perpetuates so much evil in this world. And it doesn’t matter why you’re doing it—whether from sentimentality or denial, or for strategic purposes, or for gain, or out of some twisted idea of what love is. The fact of the matter is that you are helping to keep it going, rather than acting to put a stop to it.

If you’re like most people, this aggravates you greatly when you see other people doing it, yet you do it yourself. And this, my friends, is such a huge part of what is wrong with this world. We almost always know the difference between right and wrong, but we want to fudge on the details, calling it on a case-by-case basis, and giving people a pass whenever it suits us to do so.

And that behavior is corrupt. It is messed up. It is twisted. It is unrighteous and unjust. It is both self-serving and self-defeating. And people who do this have no right to complain when others do it. No right at all. When they do that, they undermine their own honor with hypocrisy. They are morally undone.

And this is the way that most humans life their lives, mind you. They tend to view matters of justice and righteousness—good and bad—right and wrong—on some relative scale, as if a one-size-fits-all rule for things were not proper after all. Yet when they themselves are transgressed against, they’re all for the rules!

This is the way of the world. It is not the way of the real Jesus, though you’ll find a great many churches preaching another “Jesus” who won’t call it like it is. And those churches are made possible by the people who sit in their pews, being glad to have found support for this corrupt way of life.
