Ask him about the stories that were
Left out of his Bible, and he will tell you
He does not need to know them—
Even though he will wonder about them
For all his life, and will do his best
To fill in some of the gaps, best he can figure.
Yet his gap-filling was also left out of the Bible,
And he seems to think he needs that.
And one of the gaps he has filled in
Is in answer to the question of
What ought to be in the Bible,
For he has conjured up in his mind
A Table of Contents with each line initialed
By none other than God himself,
And counts it so certain as to be
Beyond question—
And takes it as God’s idea,
And not his own,
That he doesn’t need to read
Anything else.
But where is it written?
I think he needs to know.
