When he is called to heaven
To have that meeting of a lifetime—
When he has seen this world
At last from on high,
And that one close up—
When the books are opened
And his life’s value is declared after the fact—
When he sees the society of angels
And the otherworldly honor that prevails
In their grand abode
And when he realizes for himself
That the greatness of God
Is unrealizable—
Perhaps then the conclusion
He had escaped on Earth
Becomes finally inescapable
That his time down here had never been
Fundamentally about him after all.
