Not Wanting To Be Better

The one man can appreciate that, with some work,
He could do some things better.

The other will insist that he himself is capable of
Naught but error, and must have the help of
The Holy Spirit if he is to be improved in the least.

And this is a philosophical difference
Of high import, to be sure.

But no matter which camp
A person belongs to,
You can still tell whether
He wants to get better.

You can tell it by how much work
He will do to that end,
Or by how much he’ll seek out
God’s help to make it so.

And I so often meet people who think
That becoming improved people
Isn’t worth the effort of either
The work or of the praying.

And in those cases, it turns out
That having any philosophy
On this matter at all
Was rather pointless,
For not wanting can crush the life
Out of anything.
