It was his chiefest aim in life
To be like everyone else,
By which he most certainly did not mean
Those who are unlike everyone else,
But only those who are like everyone else.
And yes, that’s something of a fuzzy definition,
With which some will readily find fault.
But that’s just the point:
Everyone else doesn’t find fault with it,
Because they’re like everyone else.
See what I mean?
And that’s what he most wanted―
To be like those people,
So as not to draw attention to himself,
And not to pay attention to himself,
Nor to the others grazing alongside him
Like everyone else.
