Everybody in America knows that neither of the two major political parties is in a position to work toward its own goals without interference from the “other side”. Indeed, we hear about that with every election cycle, and practically every day. In this post, however, I’d like to head in a different direction—and I’ll need the assistance of a little “make believe” to get there. So here’s what I’m proposing:
Imagine that your favorite political party suddenly had political superpowers such as no party has never even dared to imagine. Let us suppose that someone gave your party $50 Trillion Dollars to spend as it wishes. Now that’s a big number, so let me help you get your hands around it.
$50 Trillion is enough money to:
- Equal the Gross National Product for over three years in a row.
- Pay off the national debt about three times over.
- Give every citizen in the US about $49,000.
- Build or buy a modest house for every family in the US.
- Give 5 million candidates a campaign war chest of $10 Million each.
So again, that’s a LOT of money! And here’s the question: If your favorite political party suddenly had this much money, what would they do with it?
Would they, for example:
- Pay off the national debt?
- Root out corruption in Washington?
- See to it that the Federal Government once again obeys the Constitution?
- Return us to a sound economy and to sound money?
If anyone thinks that his or her party would do one or more of these things, given the power to do it, please contact me through the Contact page on this blog. I would be very interested in hearing your opinion.
I, for one, believe that both major parties (as well as most, if not all, of the minor ones) are patently corrupt and that none of these reforms are consistent with their true desires. And why do I think this? It’s from observing their behavior over the years. In both cases, they have proven not to seize the opportunity for reform when they had it—and I’m talking about reforms that they say they want. Why didn’t the Democrats “impeach Bush” when they had the opportunity? And why didn’t the Republicans “cut spending” when they were last in control? Could it be that their advertised goals were false advertising?
So I offer this post as a bit of a taunt to those who believe that their favorite political party is, at its heart, good and beneficial and who excuse its misdeeds as being somehow not indicative of its true nature. Indeed, we hear even now about how certain candidates aim to “reform” the parties under whose umbrella they are campaigning for office. The way I see it, though, neither major party is pulling for any sort of reform that would be a threat to the runaway establishment in Washington. Indeed, I estimate that about 95% of what the Federal Government currently does is unconstitutional, and therefore, illegal. Of the various proposals for reform that are presently being promoted, do any of them dare to alter our government’s behavior by 95%?!
I think they all fall short. Far short.
So tell me, if you would, what would your party do if it had the money to achieve any reform it could wish for?
