Bitterness is a Liar

Bitterness is a liar.
She promises that,
If only you’d spend
A little more time with her,
She’d fill up that void
In your heart.

And when that doesn’t work,
She tells you that
If you could just
Get someone else
To be bitter alongside you,
That would make you whole.

And so you spread her lie
And do her dirty work
Where it shows promise.
And though you find it hard
To persuade filled hearts to
Pay her much mind,
You manage to ruin some of
The empty ones you know–
All in your quest to fill yourself
At their expense.

And when your new friends
Fail to fill you up,
Bitterness tells you
It is their fault,
And that you should now
Brood against them, too.

Any why not,
Since they’ve now
Discovered the lie
And sought the aid
Of Bitterness against you–
Faithless friends that they now seem to be?

Yet after all that,
There you sit–
Empty as before,
And looking for any option
Other than to put her away–
Because you still think
She is your friend.
