People Hold On

People hold on to all manner of ideas
Throughout their lives—
Sometimes going decades without
Stopping to reconsider
Or to correct an erroneous one.

And this they often do
With no apparent effort,
Having performed no great feat
To hold the idea.

They simply set it and forget it
And it is done,
Sticking with them for life,
And owing nothing to them
But what was probably a hasty decision
Made with but casual consideration.

And if this is something of which to be proud,
Then I would point out that
There are things in my basement
That were put where they are,
Also with scant deliberation,
And yet remain there for decades.

What a champion, then,
I must be!

And this is why I am so unimpressed
With the popular notion that to please God,
All a man has to do is to
Adopt the idea that “Jesus is Lord”,
And from there,
Never to believe differently.

The adoption of that idea is
The slightest deed imaginable,
Yet is supposed by some to be rewarded with
The greatest possible blessing.

And I, for one,
Would not imagine God
To be that easily impressed
Or that hard-up for company.
