Why do they wait for the power
Of the Indwelling
To interact with their hearts and minds
When they have the inspired words
Of that self-same Spirit in print,
Wholly capable of working His power
Upon their inner beings?
Has He not already set the table for us all,
And rung the dinner bell,
“Come and get it!”?
And are they not saying in reply—
By their actions—
“No, you bring it to us”?
If he has not already
Told them in the Bible
What they want to hear,
What makes them think
He should grant them each
A private screening,
Whispering it to them
Secretly In their hearts?
Those hungry for
The faith delivered once for all
Learn to wash their hands
And come to the table.
And the rest—
Who prefer something else—
Will tarry aloof,
Content to merely
Imagine themselves filled
With good things,
And doubling down on the risk
Of mistaking their own inclinations
For those of the Spirit.
