How Difficult for the Creature

How difficult for the creature
To want to submit himself
To the will of his Creator—

And harder still—
Having decided to want it—
To manage to live that way!

Even after a whole lifetime,
Some never seem to get the knack of it—
Even among those who try.

One might assume we’d have been
Simply created submissive—
Made to be as we ought.

But it appears instead
That we were created to
Have the choice in the matter.

And even so,
The choice,
Having been made,
Must be tended to regularly—
As must also breathing
And eating.

But unlike the breathing and the eating,
The submitting requires the constant wrestling
Against one’s own competing internal motives,
And the constant swimming against the tide
Of the society in which he lives.

How difficult for the creature
To live the heavenly way
While in these bodies
And in this place!

Yet how glorious the thought
That the struggle
Could well be worth it
Forever!
