The Empty Box

Surely, the empty box still lies around here somewhere,
Wherever it was that it fell on that great day that
He tore it open and snatched from it that
Brand new mind he had been given—
And that he has used voraciously
Ever since—even while wishing
He had either another, or
More time for this one.

And he tries to
Get them to open
Their minds, too, though
Few seem to figure out just why
Anybody would want to risk such a thing,
For it might mean seeing this world as it really is—
Which habit is not nearly as popular as one might think.

And so they are strangers,
Separated by the decision over
Whether to accept the gift or reject it,
And those who don’t can only assume that
They understand what he thinks,
Since they are unwilling
To try it themselves.
