Having Had Enough

I observe that America has not yet
Had enough of having had enough.

Although she assures herself that
Push is coming to shove
And bark to bite,
She knows deep down inside that
She intends her complaining to be
The full extent of her pushover disposition.

As ever, she is bumfuzzled at the suggestion
That she arise to put her house in order.
She has fallen in love with her captivity
And swoons now at her own complaining
As if that were the whole of her duty.

Talk as she may,
She does not want
The gloves to come off
Any more than she wants
The training wheels to come off
Or the thinking cap to go on.

She’ll give you her freedom
If only you will promise her
That she won’t have to
Take care of herself,
And that there won’t be
Too much change at once,
Whether for better or worse.
