She Giggles

She giggles,
Despite her best intentions
Toward diligence,
And uncertain as to
Why she’s giggling at all—
It being counterproductive,
Of course,
To the task at hand.

And while it puzzled me at first,
I think I have got it figured out,
For she is on a rare reprieve
From the relentless,
And is surprised
To find herself—
Of all things—
Making good music
In a grand moment
With dear friends—
As if it might actually be true
That a beautiful life
Were possible.

And that idea,
Having not yet occurred to her
In such words—
And even if it had,
Being a bit too much
To be properly expressed
In a rehearsal anyway—
Defies the moment
And sneaks out in giggles.

And while I didn’t get it at first,
I now hear it as
The best music in the room.
And I wonder who else
Might like to sing it, too.
