God Has Chosen to Measure

As I scan the scriptures, I see that
God has chosen to measure by eternity
And sometimes by ages—
And by millennia
And generations
And lifetimes.

But it strikes me in this reflective moment
That our timeless God
Has also found value
In measuring by days.

And I wonder at the import of this—
At what I might learn from it
If Wisdom were to guide me.

“And there was evening
And there was morning—
The first day.”

What might I learn
From the fact that
There was the darkness
And then the light,
And then God called it a day?

There was the problem
And then the solution—
The mess
And then the clean up—
The challenge
And then the resolution—

Perhaps, even
The question
And then the answer—
Or the call
And the response.

The day was not a one-and-done.
It was not a one-off.

No, Day One was—
And by design, mind you—
Followed by Day Two,
And Day Three,
And so on.

And this was not by accident,
But was the very plan
That would go on indefinitely
To this very day—
And presumably beyond.

And a man would live here
For as many days as he lives here,
And then he is done by decree
And he goes up to God
To settle it all.

And I must confess
That God seems more concerned
About what happens on any given day
Than I do.

And I wonder with consternation
At how I discount the days he cherishes,
Focusing instead on weeks,
Or even on phases and periods
Or years and decades,
Rather than on the elegance
Of the single, run-of-the-mill day,
And the choices I make on it.

And I have a hunch that
I might be happier and more fruitful
If I could really grasp the beauty
And the wisdom of measuring life
By the day—
Starting today, of course!

This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
