If No One

If no one were afraid
To tell a friend the truth
We could all be blessed by it—
Except, of course
That not many always
Consider the truth to be
A blessing.

And so,
To the truth teller
It’s a hit-and-miss proposition—
Whether it will be well-received or not
That is.

And so it goes
With many would-be truth tellers
Uncertain whether it’s better
To set a friend straight
Or to protect the status quo
Of the friend’s feelings.

And funny,
But isn’t that quite a similar problem
To the one that the truth-deficient friend
Is having in his own mind?

The one isn’t sure whether to
Always tell the truth,
And the other isn’t sure whether to
Always listen to it.

They can’t quite decide—
Either of them—
Whether truth is more important
Than feelings.
