I just heard a particularly mindless quote on Christian radio. It went something like this (best I remember):
“The point of Christianity is neither in self-improvement nor gaining knowledge, but in Christ-likeness.”
Source Forgotten
What I can’t figure out is how to become Christ-like without self-improvement or gaining knowledge, as Jesus’s character is a vast improvement over my own, and his knowledge is nearly infinitely greater than mine.
I don’t know what the person who said this thinks that “Christ-likeness” means, but I sure would love to see him or her be called upon in public to explain it!
And not only did this gaff get past the speaker, but past the radio producer and reader who saw that it got on the air!
I, for one, see no way to be like Jesus without learning and changing. So if somebody’s doctrine has got them looking for some way—or even thinking such a way necessary—I’d say they’ve got something turned funny in their doctrinal foundation.
