Just because you can walk up to Jesus
Doesn’t mean you can long stand with him eye to eye.
Just because you present yourself at church
Doesn’t mean you’ve got what it takes
To be invited at length into his eternal home.
It doesn’t mean you are able
To finish what you started building.
It doesn’t mean you can pay the price.
It doesn’t mean you can drink the cup,
Or be baptized with the baptism
He was baptized with.
Just because you can say grand things to Jesus
And make great promises about your intentions
Doesn’t mean you have what it takes to
Overcome and to endure to the end.
Time will tell how much you want it
And how much you want to want better
Than you want already.
You see, just because you can walk up to Jesus
Doesn’t mean that he’s the Jesus
You wish he were.
And it doesn’t mean you can handle
The truth of who he actually is.
If you dare to listen to what he says
And did you even hear that
I said “listen”?―
Prepare to be shocked
At what he teaches―
For it is not his job
To be like you,
But yours
To be like him.
