Whoever shall we blame
When the neglect and cheating
We have been thus far content to tolerate
Have grown insufferable and
Too big to ignore?
To whom shall we turn
When the time comes that
We sense the need to be
Saved from them?
God forbid that we should suffer the shame
Of being forced by necessity
At the hands of some national collapse
To become a proactive people!
Surely, there must be an easier way!
Yet our religion forbids us to blame it on God,
And experience has shown him stubborn
At not answering when we call on him
To save us from the consequences
Of our chosen way of life.
So what recourse do we have but to suffer
Either the consequences of neglect
Or the pain of reform?
But let us put this question on hold
For a while longer,
In case God changes his mind,
And decides to do for us
What he has apparently
Expected us grownups
To do for ourselves.
