Where His Wanting Fails

He wants to feel good about himself.

He wants others to feel good about him,
Which helps him to feel good about himself.

He wants God to feel good about him,
Which would also help him to feel good about himself.

But where his wanting fails is in this:
Even though he wants to feel good about himself,
He doesn’t want to be good about himself.
Dreamer that he is, he’ll take the feeling any day over the being,
Because he has learned that the being requires doing
And the doing requires a wanting that he lacks,
And in which he is unwilling to invest much effort.

He will not take the word of those
Who assure him it’s worth the investment.

So, rather than making something of himself,
He seeks out those who tell him he’s good enough already.
And although he knows better, he pretends not to know.
