Proof That They Know Better?

Think on how it is that people are born into this God-created world,
And are in a constant state of possibility regarding
Whether they might care to love and honor God or not.

And be careful to notice how so many―so very, very many―
Will not make the choice of hot or cold straightforwardly,
But choose so cavalierly to pretend to be hotter than they are,
Even as they habitually disobey the instructions of
The very God they claim to love.

And this I wonder:
Who would make that lying choice
But a soul who already knows better somehow
Than to choose against God?
What child would lie about having brushed his teeth
But the one who already knows he is supposed to?

It would not surprise me at all
To learn someday that we each come here
Having already had our souls imprinted
With the charge to love and honor God,
And being put here to work out in the long term
How we will choose.

For why else would so many choose to pretend
To be doing better with that choice
Than they really are?

If we did not know better already,
Why not simply choose to be cold
And go on about our business?

And so, here we are, with so very many
Carrying on as if God didn’t really mean it.
And they shall discover when their time comes that he did,
And that the choice to pretend was particularly egregious―
A rookie attempt at dealing with an Eternal God.
