Dividing Jesus

Some get so busy with loving
That they never take the time
To make sure they have got it just right
And are doing it as Jesus would have done.

And I marvel at the tragedy of that—
At how they ever thought it a good idea
To emulate his Love, but not his Truth—
As if the two were not in fact inseparable.

Yes, yes, he called the little children unto him,
But he was also as fierce a judge and warrior
As this world has ever seen—
And thinking it their prerogative to pick and choose,
They have not rectified the two.

And while it could be mere error that
Has steered them off course at first,
It is difficult to escape at length the conclusion
That they simply do not want the Truth along with Jesus,
But only the Love—
As if the two were not in fact inseparable—
For they have seen themselves by now
Set aside the Truth a thousand times.
And this is not by accident, but by policy.

And so I sit and watch them
Dividing Jesus in their imaginations—
As if he existed only there,
And were not expected
To call them to account for themselves.
