Not wanting to disappoint me,
He decides to stay away,
Disappointing me even further
And doubling down on the very thing
He tells himself he doesn’t want to do.

He commits himself to the quicksand
And will not be free, it seems
Unless someone else pulls him out.

And I think we are all like him
From time to time
In this doltish habit
Of avoiding the hard moments.
