Rookie Mistake

I’m not sure it was invented once and for all,
And then adopted by others, as are many things,
For it seems that each of us reinvents it for himself—
As if by necessity—rather than learning it from someone else.

It is this idea that no particular effort is necessary
In the business of good thinking—
That we will be naturally good-enough at it
To rest assured of its reliability for life.

And as ideas go, it’s one of the worst ever—
Which, if you think about it, is exactly
What we might expect from rookies.
